How Can Typography Choices Contribute to Design Effectiveness?
In the realm of visual communication, typography can make or break a design. We've gathered insights from five design professionals, including Graphic Designers and Founders, to reveal how font choices enhance their work. From pairing serif headers with sans-serif body text to blending tradition with modern typography, these experts share their secrets to making type work for them.

Pair Serif Headers with Sans-Serif Body
Try to keep header font styles to serif or uniquely-grouped fonts, and keep body text to sans-serif, more casual fonts. Readability is key in the body text, whereas eye-catching and uniqueness are key in the heading text.
Contrast Fonts for Creativity and Clarity
At our company, we design all kinds of different products, from books to websites to ads. For our own website, we aimed for a typographic design that reflected our agency's dual expertise in creativity and strategy. The challenge was to visually convey professionalism, clarity, and innovation—all key elements in the marketing world—and to keep it interesting and different than everything else out there (out of the box, if you will).
To achieve this, we selected Roboto, a modern sans-serif font known for its clean, geometric lines, as the primary typeface. Roboto’s simplicity and versatility made it ideal for web readability, ensuring that site visitors could easily engage with the content across various devices. The typeface’s rounded edges and even spacing exuded a sense of approachability, reflecting the client-focused ethos of Mandel Marketing.
However, we wanted to introduce a more dynamic element to certain areas of the site, particularly in headings and calls-to-action, to create visual interest. For this, we brought in Economica (which I particularly like), a serif font with subtle calligraphic roots, for select headlines and emphasized text. This provides a contrast with Roboto, bringing a touch of elegance and creativity without overwhelming the clean, modern look. This contrast between serif and sans-serif not only created a clear visual hierarchy but also echoed the agency’s balance of artistic storytelling and data-driven marketing strategy. Also, it's easy to read, which, as far as I'm concerned, is the most important feature of typography.
Typography Aligns with Brand Values
For a recent wellness brand project, we chose a slightly rounded sans-serif typeface that felt modern and soothing. This choice perfectly complemented the brand's calming color palette and minimalist design, creating a sense of calm and approachability. By aligning typography with the brand’s core values, we crafted a cohesive look that resonated with the target audience, reinforcing the brand's identity across all platforms.
Out-of-Bounds Text for Bold Statements
We designed posters with oversized text that goes out of bounds just slightly; we found it bold and eye-catching. The goal of the campaign was about thinking outside the box, and it fit perfectly.
Blend Tradition with Modern Typography
One project that comes to mind involved a local artisanal bakery here in Oxfordshire. They wanted to revamp their brand identity to reflect both their traditional baking methods and their modern, community-oriented ethos. Typography played a crucial role in achieving this balance.
For this project, I chose a combination of a classic serif typeface and a clean, modern sans-serif. The serif typeface was used for headlines and key branding elements. It exuded a sense of tradition and craftsmanship, reminiscent of old English bakeries. This choice helped convey the bakery's commitment to time-honored techniques and quality ingredients.
Meanwhile, the sans-serif typeface was used for body text and digital interfaces. It provided a clean, straightforward look that was easy to read across various devices, ensuring that the bakery's modern, customer-friendly approach was communicated effectively. This contrast between old and new was essential in creating a cohesive brand identity that resonated with both long-time patrons and new, younger customers.
The effectiveness of this typography choice was evident in several ways. First, it visually bridged the gap between tradition and modernity, aligning with the bakery's brand narrative. Second, customer feedback highlighted that the brand felt more 'authentic' and 'approachable,' which was precisely the response we were aiming for. Finally, this typography choice contributed to an increase in both foot traffic and online engagement, as customers were drawn to the inviting aesthetic that matched their experience in-store and online.
This project was a great example of how thoughtful typography can significantly enhance a brand's message and connect with its audience. It's all about finding that sweet spot where style meets substance, and it's something I always strive to achieve with every project at LogicLeap.
